Twenty-four hours of political manoeuvring has ended with the Greens and key crossbenchers backing the Labor Government over its 60-day dispensing policy.

Ahead of the policy’s 1 September start date, the Coalition announced a plan to block it before attempting to back down hours before the key vote.

The political drama commenced on Wednesday when Opposition health spokeswoman Anne Ruston announced a plan to utilise the Senate’s disallowance mechanism — a vote to stop regulations from coming into effect.

She said the Coalition supported the principle of the policy as a cost-of-living aid.
