The curious case of conception by oral sex alone

A doctor’s Twitter request for unusual diagnoses unearths a unique report from more than a quarter of a century ago

If a patient asks if they can get pregnant from oral sex the correct answer is ‘yes’, according to a decades-old case report that has resurfaced on social media.

Published in 1988, the case report is enjoying renewed interest after Dr Roshana Mehdian-Staffell, a UK-based orthopaedic surgeon, asked doctors on Twitter to share their most fascinating diagnosis.

While many quirky and rare conditions were shared, it was hard to beat the report of a Zimbabwe teen who became pregnant from fellatio, written by Dr Douwe Verkuyl for the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

He explained that the girl’s journey to parenthood began with a knife fight between her current beau and former lover.
