Daily fish oil slashes CV harms in dialysis patients, NEJM study suggests
A daily dose of fish oil reduces the rate of serious cardiovascular events in patients on maintenance haemodialysis by 43%, research published in The New England Journal of Medicine suggests.
The Protection against Incidences of Serious Cardiovascular Events Study (PISCES), a randomised controlled trial, enrolled 1228 participants between 2013 and 2019 and followed them until March 2023.
Participants received 4g of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (including 1.6g of eicosapentaenoic acid and 0.8g of docosahexaenoic acid) daily or a corn oil placebo.
In the fish oil group, 21% of patients had at least one serious cardiovascular event, such as cardiac death, MI or peripheral vascular disease leading to amputation or stroke.
