Deaths from invasive strep A on the rise, authorities warn

A resurgence of invasive group A streptococcus disease has been blamed for almost a dozen deaths last year, with authorities urging GPs to remain on high alert.
Queensland health authorities have revealed that nine people died from the bacterial infection in the state in 2022, among 377 confirmed cases.
This represented a 20% increase on the five-year average in Queensland and accounted for more than a third of cases in Australia that year.
Both NSW and Victoria also issued alerts for invasive group A streptococcus (iGAS) disease following similar spikes.
