Rheumatologist Dr Alex Klestov has died in the Queensland floods, after being swept away “trying to get home” to Brisbane from a clinic six hours’ drive away.

Dr Klestov’s car is believed to have been washed away on the Brisbane Valley Highway, about 60km from from the city on 27 February.

Police found his body two days later in nearby Paddy Gully Creek. He is one of 13 people to die in Queensland’s severe weather event.

Australian Rheumatology Association’s Queensland president Dr Laurel Young paid tribute to the 76-year-old’s “amazing” dedication to continuing to work in regional areas.
