Diagnosis, data and the doctor who raised millions from investors for an AI scribe

A doctor who co-founded an AI scribe business says it almost certainly will not expand into writing treatment plans or helping with diagnosis — even if he “never says never”.
Dr Thomas Kelly helped launch AI scribe Heidi Health in 2021, backed by millions of dollars from investors, including Blackbird, the investment group that backed telehealth corporate Eucalyptus.
He says doctors in over 50 countries are using Heidi to write their first-draft clinical notes based on audio of consultations, while earlier this year, Heidi was integrated into patient management software MediRecords.
According to Dr Kelly, 2023 updates to ChatGPT — the online tool that has become synonymous with AI for many people — put AI into the public consciousness in a way that supercharged Heidi and its competitors.
