Do kids raised by vegans get enough nutrition? Dr Rosemary Stanton explains the evidence
The number of vegan families in Australia is unclear — but it is almost certainly growing.
Animal rights group Vegan Australia estimates that about 2% of Australians are vegans, while the Australian Bureau of Statistics‘ estimates that 5% of the population are vegans or vegetarians.
The consequences for nutrition, especially for babies breastfed by vegan mothers and then given vegan food, remain poorly researched.
Fears include inadequate protein, calcium and vitamin B12 intake.
