‘Do no harm’: Specialists quit CDC after director is sacked for resisting anti-science orders
The director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who says she was fired by the Trump administration for refusing to “rubber-stamp unscientific, reckless directives”, is being replaced by a former speechwriter with no medical or scientific qualifications.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) — which protects public health in the US and has played a global role in eradicating smallpox, reducing polio and controlling HIV/AIDS — is in turmoil after Dr Susan Monarez (PhD) was forced out this week.
The White House said the microbiologist was asked to resign because she was “not aligned with the President’s mission to Make America Healthy Again”.
When she refused, a decision was taken to sack her.
