Doctor fatigue and travel expectations must be examined in the wake of a registrar’s death while commuting home at night, AMA Tasmania says.
Dr Artyom Avetisyan, a cardiothoracic surgery registrar at Royal Hobart Hospital, died on the night of Friday 12 June after his car came off the road, struck an embankment and rolled onto its roof.
AusDoc understands he had attended a clinic in Launceston and was making the 2.5-hour drive back to Hobart.
Dr Allan Beswick, a physician at the hospital, described Dr Avetisyan as highly regarded and generous.
