Ukraine sports doctor Dr Dmytro Babelyuk is ready to switch from managing footballers’ hamstrings to treating and eventually rehabbing patients with war wounds.

Dr Babelyuk was the team doctor for a professional football team in the city of Lviv in western Ukraine when he woke to the “nightmare” of sirens and the news that Russia had invaded his country in the early hours of 24 February.

Now he is preparing to join the medical front line, as he hunkers down with relatives in his family home, along with a few weapons, a box of bullets and bottles of water.

When the invasion began, the 26-year-old and his wife Viktoria shut the door on their newly renovated Lviv apartment and headed to his family home 70km away as it has a bomb shelter.
