Doctors have saved the life of a senior colleague who was critically injured after an alleged stabbing attack in ED.

Police said a 17-year-old had been charged with wounding, two counts of assault and threatening police over the incident.

The doctor had been working at North West Regional Hospital in Burnie, Tasmania, on Sunday night when the alleged attack occurred, said AMA Tasmania president Dr John Saul.

He said the emergency medicine specialist remained in a critical but stable condition with significant injuries to the chest, having been airlifted to Royal Hobart Hospital.
