Doctor shortage leaves sexual assault patients waiting hours

More doctors will be trained in sexual assault medical examinations in the wake of a Queensland report revealing those affected have been subjected to delays because of a lack of trained staff.
Sexual assault patients are being forced to wait hours in clothes they were attacked in before being assessed at hospitals across the state, an auditor-general’s report has found.
In some cases, they are turned away because staff don’t know how to carry out the forensic medical examination needed by police to investigate complaints.
Others are having to drive hours to get to a hospital, being transferred from one hospital to another, being refused an assessment unless they report their attack to police or not getting appropriate care, the report says.
