The case of a Queensland doctor who was infected with COVID-19 infection while at work, should act as a “wake-up call’ for all states to speed up the vaccination rollout program for frontline staff, the AMA says.

The doctor was working at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane when she treated a returned overseas traveller with the virus who had been in quarantine at the Grand Chancellor Hotel.

Genomic sequencing linked their infection, along with that of a second guest at the hotel, who also tested positive for the virus, the state government confirmed.

AMA president Dr Omar Khorshid said the doctor was infected because the vaccine program rollout had been delayed, alongside the issue of inadequate PPE for frontline staff.
