Doctors describe distressing deaths during one of the pandemic’s worst aged care COVID-19 outbreaks

One resident's oxygen tank ran out, another died 'uncomfortably' without end-of-life drugs, an inquest hears

A 71-year-old woman with COVID-19 was without medications, fluids or observations for a week before her death, during the outbreak at Newmarch House aged care facility in 2020, an inquest has heard.

Leading geriatrician Professor Susan Kurrle says Margaret Sullivan died without medical support, despite her request to be transferred to hospital during the western Sydney facility’s COVID-19 outbreak.

Professor Kurrle, of the University of Sydney, was asked to comment on the care provided to each of the 19 residents who died at Newmarch House in the early months of the pandemic.

Over this time 37 out of 97 residents tested positive and some 34 staff were also infected.
