Doctors encouraged to watch for signs of modern slavery
Doctors must view modern slavery as “more than just a social issue”, a leading GP says, following the publication of a new health worker guide on how to help those affected.
It is estimated that around 41,000 people in Australia are currently affected by modern slavery, which covers grooming, debt obligations, forced marriage, isolation or threats related to someone’s immigration status, particularly where their identity documents are being closely controlled.
The guide, released by Dr James Cockayne (PhD), the NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner, attempts to explain the signs and the physical, psychological or social impacts that victims often present with.
GP Dr Jennifer Neil said: “Modern slavery is probably more common than we realise. But in most cases, doctors are not actually aware that this is something they should or could be looking for.
