Doctors’ disciplinary history could be added to the AHPRA register under proposed reforms

A consultation paper says listing expired conditions and previous suspensions could help inform patients' decisions

Expired conditions and old suspensions could remain listed on doctors’ registration as part of an overhaul to AHPRA’s public register.

Since 2018, the register lists any adverse tribunal decisions against doctors on their profile, along with conditions that are not related to impairment, such as mandatory education requirements or limits on prescribing.

While only adverse judgments are listed, they remain on the register indefinitely — something medicolegal experts have continued to criticise.

Now, as part of a new consultation, launched late last year, AHPRA is asking whether more disciplinary history — such as conditions that have expired — should remain on the register.
