Doctor gets $165,000 payout as 1200 doctors finally compensated for unpaid overtime
Around 1200 ACT doctors are the first in Australia to receive compensation payments for unpaid unrostered overtime.
More than a thousand doctors have received compensation — more than $150,000 in some cases — as part of a $31 million unpaid overtime settlement.
Current and former junior doctors have won or settled class actions in multiple states and territories for unpaid, unrostered overtime since a landmark 2023 court victory in Victoria.
However, calculating compensation packages for each doctor has meant long waits for payouts.
Finally, about 1200 doctors are being compensated for overtime at Calvary Public Hospital Bruce — now North Canberra Hospital — and Canberra Hospital under a $31 million settlement with the ACT Government, which the Federal Court of Australia approved in 2024.
