Doctors intimidated and harassed by nurses at hospital, union claims

In one incident, a nurse allegedly snatched a mobile computer from a doctor in front of a patient and their family.

Doctors are allegedly being intimidated and bullied by nurses, as well as having clinical decisions overridden by management, according to a union complaint into a regional hospital.

Based at Gawler Health Service, 40km north of Adelaide, the doctors claim their clinical instructions to nursing staff are frequently ignored, forcing them to repeatedly check whether care has been implemented and to reassess patients as a result.

They have also reported heavy workloads, with junior doctors looking after 45-50 patients.

The allegations are contained in a report by the SA Salaried Medical Officers Association, in which doctors allege “bullying, harassment and disrespectful behaviours from various nursing staff”.
