Doctors lash out at state AMA over pay deal vote

AMA Victoria and ASMOF Victoria said, after 'careful consideration', they were confident that the ballot was conducted securely.

AMA Victoria and the Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation Victoria have rejected calls for a revote on a narrowly approved pay deal with the State Government despite anger from doctors over the ballot process.

On Tuesday, the two branches accepted an interim 12-month memorandum of understanding on pay and conditions after securing a 51.73% majority in the ballot.

The agreement — which promises public hospital doctors a 3% pay rise for specialists and 6% for doctors in training — follows weeks of industrial action and more than a year of delayed enterprise bargaining negotiations.

But some members swiftly took to social media to criticise the voting process, which they said had been open for just 22 hours and reportedly began before a members’ meeting where the arguments for and against accepting the deal were presented.
