Doctors’ pursuit of work-life balance prolonging surgery backlog: private hospital boss

Surgeons seeking a work–life balance are contributing to ongoing pandemic surgery backlogs, according to a large private hospital operator.

Ramsay Health Care chief executive officer Craig McNally says overall the private hospital sector has not done enough to address the surgery wait lists resulting from COVID-19 cancellations. 

“There is still a backlog. What we are seeing is — and I don’t think this is a necessarily good or bad thing — but doctors practising that work–life balance is still there,” Mr McNally told shareholders in a 3 May webcast.

“Generally, doctors aren’t overworking to address backlogs and operating at a comfortable level.
