Doctors put 24-hour strike on hold after government tables new pay offer
A 24-hour strike by hospital doctors has been called off, at least for now, after the SA Government tabled a new pay offer.
Negotiations had stalled between the SA Salaried Medical Officers Association (SASMOA), which sought a 30% pay rise over three years, and the government, which was only willing to offer 10% over the same period.
A strike was scheduled for 30 July, which would have left hospitals at public holiday staffing levels.
However, SASMOA chief industrial officer Bernadette Mulholland said on Tuesday that the government had tabled a new offer: a 13.6% rise for senior consultants over three years and a 16.6% to 19.2% rise for junior doctors.
