Doctors slam TGA’s looser psychedelic therapy rules as ‘unjustifiable risk to patient safety’

The TGA published the recommendations from its consultation on the Authorised Prescriber Scheme for psychedelic-assisted therapy last week.

Treatment teams for psychedelic-assisted therapy will only require a minimum of one AHPRA-registered health practitioner under new TGA rules.

Until now, qualification as a clinical psychologist was considered the “likely” minimum training for everyone in treatment, but the new move opens it up to psychotherapists, counsellors and social workers, to name a few.

The changes have been recommended by the TGA after a targeted consultation with 83 stakeholders.

But the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) has slammed the move, saying it presents an unjustifiable risk to patient safety.
