Doctors want access to medicinal cannabis drugs restricted unless companies try for TGA approval

Doctors and pharmacists also want an immediate ban on category 5 cannabis, those products with the highest THC levels.

The Federal Government should force medicinal cannabis companies to seek TGA registration for popular products or else see their products banned from the Special Access Scheme, the AMA says.

The AMA and the Pharmacy Guild of Australia have jointly written to Minister for Health and Ageing Mark Butler to warn that some telehealth doctors are prescribing dangerous quantities of unregistered medicinal cannabis drugs to vulnerable patients.

Both want the Federal Government to restrict medicinal cannabis prescribing via the Special Access Scheme outside of “genuine” exceptional circumstances — the scheme’s actual purpose.

TGA rule changes in 2018 enabled Special Access Scheme prescriptions for cannabis based on a single application rather than one to the TGA and one to state authorities.
