Doctors warn of ‘dire’ situation as COVID-19 cases rise

Doctors across NSW are warning that the health system is buckling and will not cope with rising numbers of COVID-19 patients.

Writing in the Sydney Morning Herald a respiratory specialist from Sydney’s west said he and his colleagues believed the projected patient numbers would “soon be overwhelming”. 

Active cases had doubled in 12 days and data showed about 5% needed hospitalisation, with 15-20% of these requiring ICU admission, the doctor said. 

“Hospital administrators and clinicians are making it up as they go along.
