Ophthalmologists are warning of the dangers of using mobile devices in the sun following two cases of solar maculopathy in the absence of direct sun-gazing.

Their first patient, aged 30, presented with bilateral metamorphopsia, central scotoma and decreased visual acuity two days after reading with his tablet computer on the terrace of a ski centre for four hours.

His best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 20/32 in his right eye and 20/25 in his left at initial examination.

Funduscopy revealed a faint greyish spot at the fovea of both eyes, ophthalmologists from the University Hospital of Santiago de Compostela in Spain reported in the Journal of Medical Case Reports
