A leading sexual health specialist has warned STIs are rising in part due to the “vicious cycle” of clinics struggling to meet higher demand.

Melbourne Sexual Health Centre director Professor Christopher Fairley says his service is turning away patients due to higher demand for services.

“We’re seeing more and more people coming to us who we simply can’t see,” says Professor Fairley, who is also from Monash University.

In the first six months of 2023 more than 80,400 STI cases were reported to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System, up 23% on the first half of 2022.
