AHPRA accused of charging ‘unfair’ rego fees on parental leave doctors

Victorian president Dr Jill Tomlinson says flat rates are unjust and are contributing to a loss of talent.

Medical registration fees need to be reduced because of the inequity of doctors on extended parental leave or working part-time paying the same as high-earning surgeons, the AMA says.

The flat rate where all doctors pay around $1000 a year is not only unfair but contributes to a loss of talent from the medical workforce, Dr Jill Tomlinson argues.

Writing for MJA Insight, the AMA Victoria president also said AHPRA’s ‘non-practising registration’ was “not fit for purpose”.

“Right now, AHPRA and the Medical Board [of Australia] do not offer reduced registration fees during periods of extended or parental leave,” Dr Tomlinson wrote.
