Doctors-in-training free to prescribe euthanasia drugs in VAD reform

AMA Queensland says it is concerned that non-specialists will be able to make critical life-or-death decisions

Patients could access euthanasia in Queensland without being assessed by any GP or other specialist under laws now before the state’s Parliament.

A conscience vote is expected to take place this week on the Voluntary Assisted Dying Bill.

But unlike other jurisdictions, any doctor with five years of general registration will be able to assess patients for eligibility to the proposed scheme and prescribe euthanasia drugs, provided they have completed a State-Government training module.

By contrast, the law in Victoria says at least one doctor involved with the provision of euthanasia must be a specialist with at least five years’ post-fellowship experience.
