Dr Bawa-Garba free to practise again – with conditions

The UK doctor has fought back from a criminal conviction in 2011 for gross negligence manslaughter

The paediatric registrar convicted of manslaughter over the death of a six-year-old boy in the UK will be free to return to work next year — but only under certain conditions.

For many doctors, Dr Hadiza Bawa-Garba’s case has become a symbol for the way medical regulators target the alleged failings of doctors without acknowledging the inadequacies of the systems in which they work.

On the day of the boy’s death from sepsis, she was doing the job of two registrars, covering six wards in a short-staffed and dysfunctional unit while the consultant was off site for much of the time (see timeline below).

It was also her first day back after maternity leave.
