Dr Marian Dover: A rural generalist’s 4000km journey to escape the ‘path to nowhere’

The GP obstetrician packed up her family and a trailer to seek the kind of work she'd trained for in the Kimberley.

When GP Dr Marian Dover saw the job of her dreams, with the thrill, she also experienced a little trepidation at what would come with it.

The GP obstetrician position was 4000km westwards in the small town of Kununurra (population 5000) in WA’s Kimberley region, a world away from their coastal NSW home town.

“It is in the middle of nowhere. So how do I tell my family? We are moving 4000km away — surprise!” Dr Dover tells 6minutes.

So, she sold it as an adventure to her two young children and her husband, Mark.
