Dr Nick Coatsworth: Why allowing patients to see pathology results immediately is good news

Dr Coatsworth says that giving patients immediate access to test results will not stop them coming to follow-up appointments.

The seven-day ‘lock’ on patients seeing their own pathology and imaging results in My Health Record is no more.

After a brief delay, the change went live on Monday, with exceptions — patients still cannot see anatomical pathology, cytopathology and genetic test results until five days after the results are uploaded.

The AMA had warned the move risked patients wrongly thinking their results were normal and cancelling follow-up appointments, or overwhelming GPs with demands for appointments to discuss abnormal but insignificant findings.

The drive for change had come from the Federal Government and from patient advocacy groups, including Patients Australia, where Dr Nick Coatsworth is the Health Reform Ambassador.
