Dr Philip Nitschke has dismissed claims reportedly made by a Swiss prosecutor that the first woman to die in his death pod showed signs of strangulation.

The former Australian GP originally designed the Sarco suicide capsule as a new means of euthanasia that did not rely on the administration of lethal drugs.

In a Swiss forest in September this year, a 64-year-old woman ended her life inside the device, which releases nitrogen gas when the occupant presses a button.

Following her death, police made a series of arrests, including members of the euthanasia group Last Resort who had been present at the time.
