Dr Stephen Duckett steps down: ‘The opponents of Medicare are all gone’

Dr Stephen Duckett (PhD), one of the country’s leading health policy gurus, has had various clashes with the AMA over the years, not least when he was secretary of the federal Department of Human Services and Health.
For the past decade, he has been health program director of the Grattan Institute think tank.
He’s not always been popular with doctors.
But Dr Duckett, who announced his retirement from the institute this week, says major health reform remains necessary.
