AMA president Professor Steve Robson has wagered $1000 that hospitals will be swamped by the new wave of COVID-19 over the holiday season.

In a tweet, he promised to donate the money to charity if his forecast fails to eventuate, as the Majestic Princess cruise liner docked in Sydney with 800 positive cases on board.

His bet was matched by Gold Coast GP Dr Christian Allen, who promised to bulk-bill 25 private clients for a standard $80 appointment if hospitals were overwhelmed.

A spokesman for the cruise liner said on Sunday, before the ship docked, that the case numbers reflected the increase in community transmission.
