Drug company rejects PBS funding offer for tirzepatide as diabetes treatment
The chance to get tirzepatide on the PBS for type 2 diabetes is 'now shut', Eli Lilly says.
Drug maker Eli Lilly has dramatically rebuked an offer of PBS funding for tirzepatide as a type 2 diabetes treatment.
The PBAC recommended listing tirzepatide (Mounjaro) on the PBS following its March meeting — the fourth meeting in 28 months where the GLP-1 receptor agonist was considered — according to documents published on Friday.
It said Eli Lilly had given new estimates on patient uptake at the meeting, which it had accepted, as well as “a revised approach to managing financial risks”.
It concluded that tirzepatide 15mg and 10mg, which cost about $550-$700 privately for a month’s supply, were cost-effective to fund, although tirzepatide 5mg needed a lower price.
