Holy war? Dutton says takeover of Catholic-run public hospital an ‘attack on religion’

Suggestions by Peter Dutton that a looming takeover of Calvary Public Hospital constitutes an “attack on religion” have been rubbished by doctors.

The ACT government suddenly announced this month that it will replace the Catholic organisation, Little Company of Mary, which had been running the 250-bed facility with managers from Canberra Health Services.

It sparked anger from both staff and the Catholic Church, with doctors also saying they were blindsided by the move.

There have been claims the decision was the result of a report by the ACT Legislative Assembly’s Standing Committee on Health and Community Wellbeing which criticised Calvary hospital because it was not providing access to abortion services.
