Severe e-bike injuries becoming an ‘epidemic’, says top trauma doctor
St Vincent's Hospital Sydney says one in 10 ends up in ICU with injuries that are frequently the result of high speeds.
New data show an “epidemic” of serious e-bike injuries, with emergency doctors reporting presentations have doubled in a year.
St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney has seen the number of trauma-level e-bike presentations rise — 45 in 2023, 103 in 2024 and 200 last year, its trauma team has reported.
Frequently the result of high-speed collisions with cars or fixed objects, with injuries meaning some patients could spend between six and eight weeks in hospital.
Around 10% of the presentations at St Vincent’s required intensive care.
