People who eat an egg a day are no more likely to have heart attacks or strokes than those who steer clear of eggs, a large study suggests.

US researchers looked at associations between eggs and CVD diagnoses in three large surveys that repeatedly asked participants about their eating habits over 32 years.

Survey participants were generally healthy. One survey included 83,349 female nurses aged 30-55, a second had 90,214 female nurses aged 25-44 and a third involved 42,055 male health professionals aged 40-75.

During follow-up, 14,806 people were diagnosed with CVD, including 9010 cases of coronary heart disease and 5903 cases of stroke.
