Eight doctors wrote 80,000 medicinal cannabis scripts in six months: AHPRA

It would be very difficult to understand how they could be meeting their professional obligations, says the watchdog.

Eight medical practitioners have apparently each written more than 10,000 medicinal cannabis scripts in just six months for the highest THC-strength products, AHPRA says.

There has been continued concern about the rise of the clinics since medicinal cannabis was first legalised in 2016, particularly with scripts being written following short telehealth consults.

But the latest figures look like a rapid expansion in the sale and prescription high THC medicinal cannabis.

AHPRA said treatment was initiated for some 374,000 new patients for Category 5 (high THC content) medicinal cannabis between July and Dec last year under the authorised prescriber scheme, and a further 67,000 patients under the special access scheme.
