Emergency bans for doctors a ‘concerning’ trend, Avant warns

An earlier version of this story said the Medical Council of NSW issued an official warning to Dr Simon Holliday over his comments on vaccine-related misinformation. The warning was actually issued by the NSW Health Care Complaints Commission. AusDoc apologises for the error.
The emergency suspension of a GP that was eventually thrown out by an appeal court more than three years later highlights a “concerning” trend in the use of emergency powers, Avant says.
Dr William Pridgeon was first suspended in 2018 after police arrested him for helping a mother hide her twin children from their father.
Last week, the NSW Court of Appeal said the ban was “irrational”, declaring there was no evidence he was a risk to the health and safety of the public.
