Emptying the bins? What nurses want — and definitely don’t want

APNA survey says nurses want more clinical work, and less cleaning and admin.

Primary care nurses want to spend less time emptying bins, photocopying, cleaning surfaces and doing data entry — and more time suturing, managing asthma, conducting health assessments and training colleagues.

The findings of a new workforce survey suggest many nurses feel they are being held back from more complex clinical work, with a third saying they are not being stretched to their full clinical abilities.

The Australian Primary Health Care Nurses Association (APNA) collected data from almost 2200 primary care nurses across Australia, including those working in general practice, aged care and community services.

Among nurses working in general practice, 36% said they were “regularly” working to their full scope of practice, and 35% said “often”.
