ENT surgeon returns from ban after promise to ‘operate in less rushed manner’

Dr William Mooney had been banned for a year after two patients died following sinus surgeries.

A surgeon suspended after two patients died following rushed procedures is safe to return to supervised practice, a tribunal has found.

High-profile otolaryngologist Dr William Mooney was barred for 12 months in April 2022 over his substandard care of the two patients.

One of them, a 24-year-old man, died two days after surgery to address his snoring.

Dr Mooney had noticed bleeding during the “inappropriately short” surgery, but he did not review the patient while he was in hospital, believing he had it under control.
