‘Entitled’ surgeon who skimmed $62,000 by falsifying timesheets banned for two years

The surgeon convinced himself that the false callback claims were justified because of the long hours he was working, the tribunal heard.

A vascular surgeon earning $1 million a year after tax has been banned for two years after making false callback claims worth $62,000 that he believed were justified because of his “personal sacrifice”.

He came to the attention of the Medical Board of Australia after being convicted of seven counts of deception and one of attempted deception over the fraudulent claims.

At the time, he was given a 10-month suspended sentence along with a two-year behaviour bond.

On the timesheets, the surgeon had made 24 false claims while working in SA’s public hospital system relating to 21 patients — one who was made up and two who were his private patients.
