Exclusive: 252 GP registrar places left vacant as applications collapse

More than 250 GP training places remain empty — compared with last year’s shortfall of 82 — as the number of junior doctors applying for GP training plummets.
Just 1749 doctors lodged eligible applications for 1500 training places, compared with 2000 eligible applications last year and 2400 back in 2017.
Following entry exams and interviews, only 1248 registrar positions were filled.
Former RACGP president Associate Professor Liz Marles said media attacks on general practice had taken a toll on the specialty.
