Exercise reduces bone loss after gastric surgery

Exercise training can attenuate the bone loss that commonly follows gastric bypass surgery, according to results from a randomised controlled trial.
Researchers investigated the effects of an exercise training program on bone mass, microarchitecture and bone metabolism in women with severe obesity.
In their study, 35 women were assigned to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass without a formal exercise program and 35 women were assigned to the surgery plus exercise training.
The exercise program lasted for six months and involved one-on-one supervised exercise training at the hospital three times a week, beginning three months after surgery.
