‘We don’t know if it’s risk-free’: Experts raise fears about doctors using AI to draft medical notes

Experts say there is limited information on whether they are any good.

Regulators have no insight into the risks of the AI technology being used by GPs to record patient consults and generate medical notes, the Australian Senate has been told.

The warning by two leading AI experts follows the integration this year of digital scribes into GP practice software in an attempt to save doctors from burnout from administrative work.

However, a parliamentary inquiry has been told that despite it being used to provide medical care, the TGA has “no remit” to assess the technology and the makers of the products on sale were not disclosing performance and safety data.

This was the view of Professor Enrico Coiera, director of the Centre for Health Informatics at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation.
