Health bureaucrats have “failed” on the medical workforce for decades and neglected patients in outer-city suburbs, says Labor MP and paediatrician Dr Mike Freelander.

The MP for Macarthur in southwest Sydney, who worked at Campbelltown Hospital since 1984, says his constituents receive “second-class care” because GPs and hospitals are overstretched.

“We’ve always struggled in a community that is growing very rapidly to get health infrastructure and health workforce,” he told AusDoc.

“It’s a continuing source of frustration that we’ve struggled to get GPs in the last 20-30 years to work in areas like southwest Sydney.
