Federal budget: The government will save $300m from revamping care plan items

In the fine print buried in last night’s budget papers is a plan to save $300 million by ‘streamlining’ items for chronic disease care planning.
It is one of the ‘efficiencies’ in budget lingo which the Federal Government has not been shouting about in the last 24 hours. The savings are over three years, incidentally.
The news is important given the centrality of care planning in General Practice. But before sounding the alarm, it is important to understand what is happening and that the news may even be welcome.
According to the budget papers, all the MBS items for chronic disease care plans will be rewritten to make them ‘consistent’ with recommendations from the MBS Review Taskforce.
