‘Finally paying heed to female risk factors’: Gynaecological disorders linked to 28% higher risk of heart and brain disease

Cardiologist and study co-author says he now asks about gynaecological conditions when categorising risk.

Common gynaecological conditions have been linked to a 28% overall increased risk of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease in a large systematic review and meta-analysis.

The research compared the risk of women developing these diseases across 28 studies, covering 3.2 million participants with or without endometriosis, PCOS, dysmenorrhoea or irregular menstrual cycles.

The team — including Australian, European, US and Canadian doctors and researchers — found that women with any non-malignant gynaecological disease were 41% more likely to develop ischaemic heart disease than those without a gynaecological condition.

In addition, those with a gynaecological disorder had a 33% increased risk of cerebrovascular disease.
