Five million doses of hydroxychloroquine have reportedly been sent for destruction after a stalemate between Clive Palmer and the TGA.

Mr Palmer, the mining magnate and former federal MP, announced last April he would donate 33 million doses of the drug to the national medical stockpile to help the country’s COVID-19 response.

Hydroxychloroquine had rocketed to prominence at the time, with figures including former US President Donald Trump labelling it a “game-changer” in conquering COVID-19, mainly based on the findings of small French and Chinese studies.

The federal Department of Health was initially supportive of the donation and accepted about 22 million doses of the medicine.
